New Zealand Internship Association
A group of internship providers in New Zealand

Interns in New Zealand

The New Zealand Internship Association is an informal group (unincorporated) of privately owned companies and small businesses offering unpaid internships to international students wishing to acquire work experience with academic credit. Businesses members of the Association are tour operators, travel agents, hotels, motels, Bed & Breakfasts, shops, workshops, offices, arts & crafts centres, medical or research groups.

Homestay accommodationOur internships are offered to students of all ages and origins. Many interns come from Germany, France, the United States, Finland, Belgium, etc. All internships include paid full board homestay accommodation, and airport transfers. Students are usually fully taken care of by their hosts / company from their arrival to their departure from New Zealand. The intern pays an agreed amount (usually ca NZ$40 - 50 per day) to their host family for their room and all meals.

Interns have the possibility to use their free time during, before or after their internship to visit New Zealand, either individually or in a small group. Assistance is provided.

Work experienceDepending on availabilities and needs, students will benefit from a work experience in marketing, web design, travel, canvassing, writing, office work, retail, hospitality etc. These tasks will not be imposed to the intern by the company, but will be set by mutual agreement.

Internships offered by the New Zealand Internship Association do not take advantage of the students' free workforce, but most commonly use that workforce for secondary experimental marketing, business projects, non-vital operations, etc. Such a work experience mostly offers more benefits to the intern than to the company and, for that reason, the intern does not receive any remuneration.

Internship referenceAn internship arranged through the New Zealand Internship Association is eligible for academic credit from most universities, high schools, technical institutes or colleges in most parts of the world. Provided the set goals have been achieved, the intern receives a work reference / certificate at the end of their stay in New Zealand.

If you are a student interested in such a supervised work experience in New Zealand, please fill out the non-committing Internship Registration Of Interest Form, and we will attempt to match your enquiry with a vacant internship position at one of our member companies.
